A word from author Mary Ann Shaffer
“If nothing else, I hope these characters and their story shed some light on the sufferings and strength of the people of the Channel Islands during German Occupation. I hope, too, that my book will illuminate my belief that love of art–be it poetry, storytelling, painting, sculpture, or music–enables people to transcend any barrier man has yet devised”–Mary Ann Shaffer, December 2007 regarding her novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
In your opinion, did Shaffer succeed?

She certainly succeeded! The power of the imagination is the foundation of the creation of great art and of appreciation for art created by others. The story highlights the ability to transcend a situation through shared conversation and imagination (an undervalued tool in our society).

A friend sent me this link to an article in the Boston Globe and I think it’s a wonderful example of what Mary Ann is talking about in this quote and it’s a touching story.
“The word is their bond: From a rare friendship, a book club for the homeless is born” http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/07/05/from_a_rare_friendship_a_book_club_for_the_homeless_is_born?s_campaign=8315
